New WA Road Train Signage: A Safer Way to Share the Road

A Safer Way to Share the Road

In a move designed to improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents, Western Australia has introduced new signage regulations for road trains and heavy vehicles. The new rules require trucks to display signs indicating the exact length of the vehicle in metres, as well as an equivalent number of passenger car lengths. This replaces the traditional 'long vehicle' or 'road train' signs commonly seen on haulage trailers.

The aim is to provide motorists, especially those attempting to overtake, with a clearer understanding of the size of these enormous vehicles, which can stretch up to 50 metres or more. With this new system, drivers will be better equipped to judge whether it's safe to pass, particularly when confronted with road trains that can extend for significant distances.

Visual Representation for Safer Road Sharing

The new signage will be mandatory for restricted access vehicles, including road trains, and will feature information on the number of trailers and the total length of the vehicle. The length will be shown as a comparison to car lengths, providing a more visual and intuitive way for road users to assess the size of the vehicle in front of them. This addition is designed to help prevent situations where drivers attempt overtakes without fully appreciating the scale of the vehicle they're dealing with.

The changes apply to vehicle combinations ranging from 22 metres to 60 metres in length, covering a wide range of heavy vehicles. Main Roads WA tested this new signage on regional roads throughout 2022 and 2023, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. Approximately 90% of respondents supported the initiative, suggesting it will have a positive impact on road safety.

WA Leads the Way with Innovative Road Safety Measure

Although Western Australia is the first state to introduce this kind of signage, there has been significant interest from other states, indicating the potential for broader adoption in the future. Currently, interstate heavy vehicle operators will not face penalties under the new regulations, as the old warning signage will still be accepted.

Transition Period for WA Transport Industry

To give the WA transport industry time to adjust, a six-month transition period has been granted, starting from the first of this month. During this time, road train operators will need to replace their old signage with the new standards.

However, the introduction of these regulations has not been without controversy. Some road train operators, such as Cam Dumesny from the Western Roads Federation, have expressed concerns that the new rules will impose significant costs on fleet owners. Drivers may need to carry multiple signs for different trailer combinations, which could cost upwards of $200,000 to $300,000 for large fleets. This added burden could lead to logistical challenges, particularly when changing trailer configurations frequently.

A Step Toward Safer Overtaking

Despite the challenges, the new signage is widely regarded as a step in the right direction for improving road safety. By providing more accurate and easily understood information, motorists can make better decisions, leading to safer overtaking manoeuvres and a reduced likelihood of accidents. The visual cues will also help reduce confusion, particularly in regions where road trains are a common sight.

Ultimately, while the change may require some adjustment, the aim of the new regulations is clear: to make roads safer for everyone by enhancing awareness and communication between road users.
