What is the difference between EGP and HIP?

When it comes to reflective sheeting, there are two major types that are widely used in traffic and road safety applications – EGP (Engineer Grade Prismatic) and HIP (High-Intensity Prismatic) sheeting. Both these types of sheeting are designed to reflect light back to the source, making them highly visible even in low light conditions such as dusk, dawn, or at night.

EGP Reflective Sheeting

EGP is the more economical of the two types of reflective sheeting. It is made using microprismatic technology, where tiny prisms are formed on a sheet of reflective material. These prisms reflect light back to the source, making the material appear bright and highly visible in the dark.

EGP sheeting is commonly used for non-critical traffic signs, parking lot signs, and other road markings where high visibility is not a critical requirement. The material is typically not as bright or durable as HIP sheeting, but it still provides good reflectivity and is a cost-effective solution for many applications.

HIP Reflective Sheeting

HIP reflective sheeting, on the other hand, is made using a more advanced form of microprismatic technology. The prisms on HIP sheeting are larger and more tightly packed together, which makes the material significantly brighter and more reflective than EGP sheeting.

HIP sheeting is used in applications where high visibility is critical, such as highway signs, construction zone signs, and other warning signs. The material is more expensive than EGP sheeting, but its superior reflectivity and durability make it a worthwhile investment in many situations. In fact, HIP sheeting can provide up to 10 times more reflectivity than EGP sheeting, making it a much safer choice for high-speed roadways and other high-risk applications.

Both EGP and HIP reflective sheeting are effective solutions for enhancing visibility and improving road safety. However, the choice of which type of sheeting to use ultimately depends on the specific needs of the application. EGP sheeting is a cost-effective option for non-critical signs and markings, while HIP sheeting is the go-to choice for high-risk areas and critical signage. By understanding the differences between these two products, traffic and road safety professionals can make more informed decisions when selecting reflective sheeting for their projects.
